Pet owners, trainers, shelter and vet staff, foster care providers will gain valuable information to improve their fearful dog handling skills.

There are still spaces available for both morning and afternoon sessions. Reserve now to avoid missing out on the opportunity to learn how to help special needs dogs.

The morning session will include:

  • Why dogs are afraid
  • What fear/stress looks like
  • How to interact with feral or unsocialized dogs
  • How to work with fear based behaviors
  • The use of play in the rehabilitation of fearful dogs
  • Understanding the effects of reinforcement & punishment on fearful dogs
  • What is learned helplessness?
  • Myth of reinforcing fear
  • Equipment
  • Medication
  • Useful techniques & protocols for handling & training fearful dogs

In the afternoon there will be further consideration of techniques and methods for management and treatment of sound phobias.

If your dog suffers from sound sensitivity and gets fearful during thunderstorms, fireworks, gunshots and others, this workshop may help you and your dog immensely! Discover the aspects of storms that your dog may be reacting to, and several ways you can help your dog become less fearful of the sounds that worry him. For new dog or puppy owners, this seminar helps set you and your dog up for success by learning steps that may prevent your dog from developing this anxiety.

Helen Nicholls has been working with sound sensitivity for 7 years, when her own dog Merlin developed thunder phobia at an early age. Since then she has given workshops to dog owners and professionals to learn how to understand and help their dogs cope with sound sensitivity.

Please leave your fearful dog at home! Demo dogs will be screened prior to the presentation to determine if they are appropriate (will be comfortable) for this setting. The methods and skills you learn here today are transferable to the dogs in your home or shelter.

CEUs will be available for CPDTs.
