I’m participating in Blog-a-thon 2011 to help raise money for homeless animals at the Nebraska Humane Society.

What this means will vary from dog to dog. Some dogs settle in just nicely once they know where the treats come from and where the tennis balls are kept. Others may require time and space to get over their new home jitters.

It’s easy for dog lovers to forget that even though we have lots of positive experience with dogs in general, and are excited about starting a new relationship, our new dog may not have the same set of skills our other dogs have had. It’s not unlike dating. You may be all fired up about that first kiss, but the dog may feel more comfortable if you waited. Just because you bought them dinner doesn’t mean you can jump right into heavy petting.

Here’s a video with a game that every dog owner should play with their dog. Feeling good about their name is an important first step. It’s a great way to start a beautiful relationship.
